What Has Changed

  • Mercedes-all-new Benz's luxury electric sedan
  • Range is estimated to be 350 miles by the EPA.
  • Mercedes' new Hyperscreen display is unveiled.
  • The first EQS generation for 2022 is revealed.

Mercedes-all-electric Benz's Mercedes-EQ sub-brand will debut with the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS. The EQS is the gas-powered S-Class sedan's equivalent. For decades, the S-Class has set the luxury standard. As with the S-Class, the EQS is equipped with the latest Mercedes-Benz luxury features, in-car technology, and advanced driver assistance systems.

The EQS's massive single-glass dashboard panel that runs from door to door is at the top of the list. The instrument panel, central infotainment touchscreen, and an optional third touchscreen for the front passenger are all housed in the Hyperscreen. We're not usually fans of having all controls centralized on the touchscreen, but Mercedes' latest iteration of the lauded MBUX infotainment system features large virtual buttons and logical menus for easy operation.

Mercedes will initially offer two EQS models. There are two models: the 450+ with a single electric motor and rear-wheel drive, and the 580 4Matic with an additional electric motor and all-wheel drive. On a full charge, the range is excellent. According to the EPA, the base EQS 450+ has a range of 350 miles, but we easily exceeded that by traveling 422 miles on a single charge.

Mercedes has been conspicuously absent from the push for electric vehicles, taking an extended period of time to introduce a fully electric vehicle capable of competing with the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, Lucid Air, and Audi e-tron GT, among others. However, what a debut. Our test team's Expert Rating provides an in-depth analysis of the EQS' performance, interior quality, and more.
